A Cabin in the Woods

Situated in a beautiful part of the country, we had the chance to work alongside our client to design and build a log cabin in a remote spot on their land. The site was inaccessible by vehicle so we had to create a track using local stone quarried close by.

The timber we milled on site from wind blown trees out of an old forestry plantation. A mix of Douglas Fir and Spruce Pine was available to us. We spent two weeks dragging out large trees for processing using the mobile saw mill. It was a real challenge as the terrain was steep and the ground boggy under foot. Cleaning up this area of windblown trees was part of a wider initiative to replant large areas with native trees.

Building this cabin was and still remains one of the most hands-on and interesting projects we have worked on to date. We learnt a lot about the process of turning a tree into a piece of timber suitable to build with.
